DUVET
This option is basically a quilt inside of a "quilt-pillowcase" so you don't have to wash the actual quilt/comforter, you just wash the case.
PROS: The combo has a fluffyier, comfier feel. The duvet cover is much easier to wash and definitely to dry than the whole comforter. You can also have different looks just like sheets.
CONS: It is kind of annoying to take the duvet off and on in order to wash it. But that is the only con.

COMFORTER
This is a quilted blanket stuffed with filling but no removable exterior. They are usually sold in sets and "ready-to-wear" (or use) off the shelf.
PROS: As long as it's machine washable, you don't have to deal with taking the duvet cover off & on (but might be hard to fit into the washing machine).
CONS: Can be a design commitment. They are less fluffy-cloud-like. Often they are dry clean only.
